Chubya Harper - Global Warming Man Stephen Harper’s spiritual ties with Dubya Bush have tightened like new purse strings on money earmarked to fight global warming. Harper and Environment Minister Rona Ambrose have little patience for Kyoto or any other agreements that might bring obligations to Big Oil. They ordered federal officials at the UN climate conference to oppose curbs on greenhouse gases causing global warming. The man of the West has even attacked his new ally Quebec for its leadership in climate change efforts. Quebec intends to remain committed to meeting its Kyoto targets and this has angered Harper. Harper spouts his new mantra as he travels in an SUV motorcade. Rona Ambrose is at his side as Canada’s first anti Environment Minister. As the roaring engines guzzle gas he cancels support for environmental initiatives. Harper has killed home renovation programs that create jobs, reduce emissions and energy bills. He announced that we won’t try to meet the greenhouse gas reductions we promised to secure. He abandoned our duties as president of the UN Climate Change negotiations by having Environment Minister Rona Ambrose stay only 24 hours at the two week negotiation meetings in Bonn. He also tabled a budget that continues the annual $1.5 billion in corporate subsidies for oil sands developments that accelerate our emissions. Kyoto pollution targets can't be met, the Harper government says. Yet a check by Toronto Star reporters showed that Ottawa's own figures suggest that is not the case. Canada is the only country that wants to throw up its hands and surrender on global warming and the reason is that Harper is a friend of George Bush and Big Oil.
Chubya fears addressing the issue of soaring oil and gas exports to the U.S; a big emissions boosting industry that rains wealth on Alberta. Treating and transporting oil and gas for export added almost 48 million tons to Canadian emissions in 2004. Extracting conventional oil in Alberta now uses twice as much energy per barrel as in 1990, helping to create a 60 per cent jump in greenhouse emissions by the petroleum industry. The Alberta Big Oil connection means Harper’s new role as Global Warming Man will be ongoing.
