  • 2004 Reforms to federal campaign contributions. Companies and unions are no longer allowed to donate to federal parties or leadership campaigns. They may give up to $1,000 to candidates in a federal election. Donations to candidates from individuals are now capped at $10,000. Ottawa now finances campaigns by giving federal political parties $1.75 for every vote received in the previous federal election.

The Vote: To win a majority 155 of the 308 seats must be won by a party in the June 28 vote. The Liberals had 168 seats in the House of Commons when the election was called on May 23rd. The Conservatives had 72, the Bloc 33, and the NDP 14.
